Description
Acokanthera spectabilis Benth. original illustration from Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Watercolour and pencil on paper. Native of the Western districts of South Africa from Albany to Port Natal, on woody sand-hills near the sea. Barber writes that the seeds are intensely bitter and the whole plant is considered by native people to be a deadly poisonous one. It was introduced in England by Mr B.S. Williams and exhibited by him in 1872. This specimen flowered at Kew on February 1878.
