Description

A caespitose perennial grass with culms to 1 m high, of disturbed sites in tree and bush-savanna; known only in Ghana in the Region, but widely dispersed over NE, E, South Central and SW Africa.The grass has a termitophile tendency being commonly recorded on termitaria (Ghana: 1, 4; Malawi: 6, 8; Zimbabwe: 7). These reports do not indicate the nature of the affinity, if any. In Ghana it is also found on saline sites (2).In Sudan (3) and in Kenya (5) it provides good grazing. In the latter territory cane rats are reported to eat it (5). The culms are used in Kenya for thatching (5).
