Names
Syzygium guineense subsp. afromontanum F. White [family MYRTACEAE], F.F.N.R.: 455, 303 (1962).—Boutique in F.C.B., Myrtac.: 14, t. 1 fig. B (1968).—Amshon’ in C.F.A 4: 107 (1970).—Chapman & White, Evergreen Forests of Malawi: 44, photogr. 21 (1970). TAB. 45 fig. F. Type: Zambia, Ndola, fl. 14.viii.1952, White 3058 (FHO, isotype; K, holotype).
Information
Medium-sized, evergreen tree, in F.Z. area rarely more than 20 m. tall, rarely a small tree or a shrub. Bole often short. Crown wide-spreading when tree is growing in open. Bark pale brown, rough. Young stems more-or-less terete or quadrangular and winged. Receptacle (including pseudopedicel) + calyx 0·4–0·55 cm. long; calyx +upper receptacle 0·2–0·25 cm. long; filaments 0·35–0·7 cm. long. Fruit c. 1·8 x 1·5 cm., purple-black, subglobose or very slightly ellipsoid, persistent calyx c. 0·15 x 03 cm.
Range
Widespread on the mountains and uplands of Africa.
Notes
Over most of its range this subspecies is very uniform. At its upper altitudinal limits on certain mountains in the F.Z. area it is replaced by a variant (Group B, see below) which has quadrangular branchlets and much smaller more sclerophyllous leaves and is also often of greatly reduced stature. Group B is connected by intermediates on the one hand to Group A (subsp. afromontanum sensu stricto) and on the other hand to S. masukuense subsp. pachyphyllum.
