CHASSALIA discolor Verdc. subsp. grandifolia [family RUBIACEAE], in K.B. 30: 275 (1975). Type: Tanzania, Uluguru Mts., E. foothills, Kimboza Forest Reserve, near R. Ruvu, T. & S. Pócs 6274/D (EA, holo.!)
Information
Calyx-lobes short, triangular as in subsp. discolor. Leaves large up to 24.5 cm. long, 9.5 cm. wide.
Range
DISTR. T6 not known elsewhere
Altitude range
300–400 m.
Distribution
TANZANIA Morogoro District E. Uluguru Mts., Milawilila Forest Reserve, 4 km. N. of Tawa Village in the Mvuha R. Valley, 13 Mar. 1971, Pócs 6416/A! & Uluguru Mts., Kimboza Forest Reserve, between Mkuyuni and Matombo, 19 Nov. 1969, Pócs & Gibbon 6060/D! & without exact locality, Bounce 636!
Notes
There is considerable variation in the length and colour of the corolla-tube. There has been a tendency to use the name C. violacea for this species but K. Schumann distinctly says flowers pedicellate in his description of that species and flowers 1.3 cm. long. W. Usambara collections seem to be the only ones where the flowers are said to have the corolla-lobes yellow inside. There are specimens at Kew and Brussels, Buchwald 161, which are labelled C. buchwaldii K. Schum. by a Berlin hand but do not agree with C. albiflora K. Krause (q.v.). There is nothing to prove this is C. buchwaldii since under the description of that K. Schumann merely says “Früher auch von Dr. Buchwald gesammelt” with no mention of a number. These sterile specimens could be C. discolor.
