Names
CHASSALIA discolor K. Schum. [family RUBIACEAE], in E.J. 34: 339 (1904); T.T.C.L.: 490 (1949); K.T.S.: 435 (1961), pro parte; Verdc. in K.B. 30: 274 (1975). Types: Tanzania, W. Usambara Mts., between Kwai and Gare, Engler 1224 (B, syn. †) & Magamba, above Kwai, Engler 1285 (B, syn. †) & presumably W. Usambara Mts., Buchwald 102 (B, syn. †, K, isosyn.!)
Information
Shrub (or rarely ± herbaceous) (0.5–)1–4(–6) m. tall, with finely ridged glabrous stems. Leaf-blades oblanceolate to elliptic- or ovate-oblanceolate, 4–15.5 cm. long, 1.4–5(–7) cm. wide, distinctly narrowly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, thin, slightly discolorous, glabrous, the margins often slightly wavy; petiole 0.8–4 cm. long; stipules triangular, 3–4 mm. long with 2 apical colleter-tipped filiform lobes 1 mm. long; older stipules often corky, persistent. Flowers scented, in mostly trichotomously branched panicles, each ultimate branchlet 3-several-flowered; peduncles 0.7–2 cm. long, mostly purplish; secondary peduncles 0.3–2 cm. long; pedicels obsolete or up to ± 1 mm. long; bracts small, ciliate. Calyx-tube mostly magenta pink, oblong, 1–1.8 mm. long, ribbed; limb-tube 0.7–1.2 mm. long; lobes triangular to lanceolate, 0.5–3.5 mm. long, if longer then often recurved at the tips. Corolla waxy, glabrous, white, white and pink, white suffused pink outside or magenta-pink, probably usually yellow inside; tube often curved, ± cylindrical, 1.2–2.1 cm. long; lobes elliptic-lanceolate, 2–4 mm. long, 1.5–2.5 mm. wide, venose, winged (particularly in bud). Anthers just exserted for 2/3 their length or tips at throat-level or entirely exserted in short-styled flowers, tips 4–6 mm. below the throat in long-styled flowers. Style 7–10 mm. long in short-styled flowers, with stigma-lobes 4–5 mm. long; 14–5 mm. long in long-styled flowers, with stigma-lobes 5 mm. long. Fruits white, reddish mauve or blackish purple, often translucent, ± didymous or depressed subglobose, 5–6 mm. long, 6–7.5 mm. wide, 5 mm. thick, mostly ribbed, with a median groove, usually crowned with the persistent calyx-lobes; pyrenes pale, ± semi-ovoid or subglobose, 5–6 mm. long, 4.5 mm. wide, 3–3.5 mm. thick, with a basal median keel, ± rugulose. Seed ± 5 mm. wide, strongly concavo-convex.
