Scales of the rhizome of two kinds, entirely light chestnut and with a narrow thick black shining central stripe and broad light chestnut edges. Fronds dimorphic, the fertile about twice as long as the sterile and less numerous, both after their death becoming dry and having the lamina declinate and forming an angle of about 90° with the stipe owing to a sharp bend in the base of the lamina and the adjacent apex of the stipe. Fertile fronds (8–)15–18(–27) cm long with the stipe 2–3 times as long as the lamina, sparsely scaly. Lamina flabellate to very broadly obdeltoid with edges forming an angle of 100–180°, cut into two nearly symmetric halves by a fairly wide median deep notch, and consisting of a 3–4 times dichotomous branch system. Branches of the first dichotomy nearly equal (3–3.5 mm) forming an angle of about 50–70°; branches of the second dichotomy unequal, the inner (± 5 mm) longer than the outer (± 3 mm); all the dichotomies usually being in the lower third of the lamina. Segments of the blade 7–16, linear, mostly straight, tapering upwards, with a single hardened acute point. Basal part of the lamina scabridulous above and persistently scaly beneath. Scales light fulvous, strongly falcate to tortuous, lanceolate, irregularly lobate to coarsely dentate at the base, tapering upwards and ending in a long hair. Sterile fronds (very seldom a short sorus is present in some segments of these fronds) flabellate with segments short, elongate-cuneate, toothed on their apical part or sometimes narrowly oblanceolate and then serrulate in the upper half of the edge.
