Names
SOLANUM villosum (Bernh. ex Willd.) Edmonds subsp. miniatum [family SOLANACEAE], in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 89: 166 (1984);
SOLANUM miniatum Bernh. ex Willd. [family SOLANACEAE], (1809). Fig. 146B, C. [type as above]
SOLANUM rubrum Miller [family SOLANACEAE], (1768).
SOLANUM humile Bernh. ex Willd. [family SOLANACEAE], (1809).
SOLANUM plebeium A. Rich. [family SOLANACEAE], (1850).
?SOLANUM hildebrandtii A. Br. & Bouché [family ], (1874);. type: plant cultivated in Berlin from seeds collected in Somalia by Hildebrandt (B holo., destr.).
Information
Plant with eglandular ± appressed hairs.
Range
N1, 2 widespread in tropical and southern Africa, Europe and Middle East, introduced to North America and possibly New Zealand.
Altitude range
1300–2000 m.
Distribution
SOMALIA Hemming 2226; Gillett 4126, 4923.
Notes
A plant from Berlin, now at HBG, annotated as S. hildebrandtii and probably part of the original live collection in the Berlin Botanical Garden is referrable to S. villosum subsp. miniatum and the name is therefore placed in synonymy here. One depauperate specimen, Bally 11056 from N2, 1500 m, may represent this taxon or true S. nigrum L. The report of S. scabrum from southern Somalia in Cuf. Enum.: 876 (1963) was probably based on material of S. villosum subsp. miniatum.
