About six species in tropical Asia, one of which extends to tropical Africa. Other species are cultivated for their edible fruits.
Annual or perennial herbs or undershrubs. Leaves palmately lobed or divided; stipules filiform. Flowers solitary, axillary or in terminal racemes. Epicalyx of 4 to many bracts, usually soon falling. Calyx 5-toothed at the apex, splitting on one side during the expansion of the corolla, circumscissile at the base, adnate to the corolla and falling with it. Ovary 5-celled; ovules many; style indistinctly 5-branched. Fruit an elongate loculicidal capsule.

Stout annual herb, up to 2.5 m tall; young stems with short stiff simple hairs. Leaf-blades suborbicular in outline, up to c. 25 x 25 cm, 5–7-lobed or parted, with short stiff simple hairs on both surfaces; petiole up to 30 cm long. Flowers in leaf axils. Epicalyx bracts 7–12, linear to lanceolate, up to 25 mm long, present at time of flowering but later falling off. Calyx acuminate in bud, 3–4 cm long, rough outside. Petals yellow or white with dark purple base, 4–8 cm long. Capsule narrowly ellipsoid, usually 8 cm or more long. Seeds c. 5 mm long, depressed-globose, with concentric lines, sometimes pilose.

Stout annual herb up to 1.5 m tall; young stems with short simple hairs. Leaf-blades suborbicular in outline, up to 15 x 15 cm, deeply 3–5-lobed, rough on both sides, with stellate hairs beneath; petiole up to 20 cm long. Flowers in a raceme or lowermost ones axillary. Epicalyx bracts 5–6, linear to lanceolate, only present on young buds. Calyx bottle-shaped in bud, c. 2 cm long, rough-tomentose. Petals white turning pink and often with dark purple base, 2–3.5 cm long. Capsule ellipsoid, 3–4 cm long, puberulous to pubescent; seeds c. 3 mm long, subglobose, with concentric lines and crisped hairs.

Woody climber up to c. 3 m high; young stems densely pubescent with appressed to spreading ± ferruginous hairs. Leaflets (14–)18–26, oblong, rounded and mucronate at the apex, 6–12 x 2–4.5 mm, appressed pilose on both surfaces, venation raised and prominent above. Inflorescences to 14 cm long including peduncle. Calyx 3–3.5 mm long, denticulate, pubescent with appressed ± ferruginous hairs c. 0.4 mm long. Corolla lilac, 11–12.5 mm long. Pod oblong, 4–6 x 1–1.1 cm, with a downcurved beak, pubescent with white or ± ferruginous appressed hairs. Seeds 5–7, immature ones greenish, compressed, 5.2–5.6 x 4.4–4.5 mm.

Woody climber up to c. 3 m high; young stems sparsely pubescent with appressed white hairs. Leaflets 8–12, elliptic-oblong, rounded and mucronate at the apex, 5–11 x 2.5–5 mm, appressed pubescent on both surfaces, venation raised and prominent above. Inflorescences to 10 cm long including peduncle. Calyx 3–3.5 mm long, denticulate, pubescent with white hairs 0.1–0.2 mm long. Corolla pale blue, 10–11.5 mm long. Pod oblong, 3.5–4.5 x 1 cm, with a downcurved beak, pubescent with white appressed hairs. Seeds 4–6, greenish, compressed, c. 4.8 x 4.8 mm.

Woody climber 1–4.5 m tall. Leaflets 16–34, deciduous, oblong, obovate-oblong or ovate, 0.6–2.7 x 0.3–1 cm, glabrous above, sparsely appressed pubescent beneath. Inflorescences robust, usually curved, 2–7 cm long with subsessile flowers in dense clusters; peduncles 1.5–6 cm long. Calyx 3 mm long, denticulate, sparsely puberulous. Corolla yellow, white, pink or mauve, 9–15 mm long. Pod oblong, 2–4(–5) x 1–1.5 cm, with a hooked beak, with dense short reddish-brown appressed pubescence. Seeds (1–)3–7, red and black, almost globose, 5–7 x 4–5 mm, shining.

Annual or perennial herbs, subshrubs or shrubs, usually with stellate hairs. Leaves entire or rarely shallowly 3-lobed; stipules usually filiform to linear. Flowers solitary or clustered, sometimes on short axillary branches, often aggregated into terminal and lateral panicles. Epicalyx absent. Calyx 5-lobed. Petals mostly yellow, united at the base and adnate to the base of the staminal tube. Ovary of (5–)10–40 3–9-ovulate free carpels around a central axis; style-branches as many as the carpels. Fruit a subglobose to flattened schizocarp; mericarps usually dehiscing apically along the ventral suture, 1–3(–9)-seeded. Seeds reniform to globose, glabrous to tomentose, smooth to warted.

Leaves with 1.5–10 cm long petiole; blade suborbicular, up to 10.5 x 12 cm, cordate at the base, shortly acuminate to rounded or emarginate at the apex, with usually sharply dentate margins. Shrubby herb or shrub, up to c. 2 m tall; all parts greyish tomentose with very short stellate hairs and without long simple hairs; stems soon angular with longitudinal ridges. Leaves with 1–12 cm long petiole; blade ± broadly ovate, up to 23 x 16 cm but usually much smaller, cordate at the base, acute to acuminate at the apex, with crenate or serrate margins. Flowers in terminal and lateral panicles; pedicels 1–3.5 cm long. Calyx 6–10 mm long. Petals 10–22 mm long, yellow to orange. Herb or subshrub, up to c. 1.5 m tall, with a ± yellowish dense indumentum. Leaves petiolate; blade broadly ovate to suborbicular, up to c. 8 x 8 cm, cordate at the base, with shallowly crenate or dentate margins, stellate-pubescent and ± rough above, softly tomentose beneath. Flowers in upper leaf axils; pedicels up to 8 cm long. Calyx 12–19 mm long, ultimately equalling or exceeding the ripe fruit. Petals c. 18 mm long, yellow. Staminal column glabrous or with tufts of stellate hairs at the line of fusion with the petals. Mericarps c. 20–26, (2–)3-seeded, densely hairy, 12–14 x 5–6 mm, dosal corner with a triangular-acuminate point ending in a short awn. Dwarf shrub or shrubby herb, sometimes prostrate, with stems up to at least 50 cm long; stems with a whitish dense indumentum of short hairs and sometimes also with long simple hairs in upper part. Leaves with 0.2–8 cm long petiole; blade suborbicular, up to 6 x 7 cm but usually much smaller, cordate at the base, obtuse to broadly rounded at the apex, with crenate-dentate margins, yellowish or whitish tomentose with short hairs. Flowers solitary in leaf axils or in axillary cymes; pedicels c. 1–3.8 cm long. Calyx c. 5–7 mm long, tomentose, much shorter than the fruit. Petals 7–10 mm long, yellow. Some 1100 species, mostly tropical and subtropical, the majority in Australia, some 130 in Africa.
Trees or shrubs, sometimes climbing; the native species almost always armed with prickles or stipular spines, the introduced ones usually unarmed. Leaves bipinnate or, in introduced species, modified to phyllodes; gland usually present on upper side of petiole, glands often also present at insertion of pinnae. Flowers in spikes, spike-like racemes or heads, bisexual or polygamous, sometimes enclosed in bud by a ring of bracts, the involucel, the remnants of which remain on the peduncle. Calyx usually 4–5-lobed, or subtruncate. Corolla 4–5(–7)-lobed. Stamens many; filamentsfree, or (in A. albida) connate at the base; anthers glandular at apex, or (in A. albida and A. saligna) eglandular. Pods very variable, dehiscent or sometimes indehiscent, flat to ± thickened, straight, curved, spiral or contorted.

Tree up to 30 m high, with ± rounded crown; bark rough, dark brown or greyish; branchlets straw-coloured or whitish. Stipular spines up to c. 2 cm long, straight. Leaves with pinnae 3–10 pairs; rhachis with a conspicuous gland at the junction of each pinna pair, but petiole eglandular; leaflets 6–23 pairs, 3.5–6(–12) x 0.7–2.25(–4) mm. Flowers yellowish-white, sessile or shortly pedicellate, in spikes 3.5–14 cm long. Calyx up to 2 mm long. Corolla up to 3.5 mm long. Filaments basally connate; anthers eglandular even in bud. Pods falcate or coiled, indehiscent, 6–25 x 2–3.5 cm, bright orange or purplish-brown. Seeds elliptic-lenticular, 9–11 x 6–8 mm; areole 7–9 x 4–6 mm.
