Information
Shrubby herb, up to 1.5 m or more tall; all parts pubescent to lanate. Leaves with 1.5–8 cm long petiole; stipules up to 1 mm wide; blade ovate to suborbicular, up to 15 x 11.5 cm, cordate at the base, acuminate to rounded at the apex, with dentate margins. Flowers in leaf axils and sometimes merging into panicles; pedicels 1–6 cm long. Calyx 10–15 mm long. Petals 14–25 mm long, yellow to orange with dark red to purple base. Mericarps c. 22–34, 8–9.5 x 5–6.5 mm, 1–2-seeded, dorsal corner slightly angled or shortly apiculate. Seeds c. 2.5 mm long, with simple or stellate hairs.
Range
S2, 3 Djibouti, Eritrea, N Ethiopia, Sudan to West Africa, Cape Verde Is, Egypt and the Middle East, Arabia to India, and in the Mascarene Is.
Altitude range
30–100 m.
