Notes
One specimen (Jackson 819 from Mposa, Malawi) is discordant in H. newtonii. Its raceme-bases are only sparsely pilose, they are not deflexed, and their appendage is 4 mm long. The spikelet dimensions and colouring are otherwise typical of the species, but the grooves in the inferior glume of the sessile spikelet are coalescent into a single deep median furrow. The specimen is either an exceptional form of H. newtonii, which does not seem very likely, or it is a product of introgression from Hyperthelia dissoluta (Nees) Clayton.
