Shrub or small tree, 4–7 (9) m. high. Branches spreading, glabrous even when young. Leaves petiolate; lamina 7–15 x 2–4.5 (6) cm., narrowly elliptic to oblong or oblanceolate, obtuse or acute to acuminate at the apex, cuneate or rarely rounded at the base, membranous, bluish-green, concolorous, glabrous, with relatively loosely reticulate venation prominent on both sides; petiole 2–4 mm. long, glabrous or rarely sparsely pubescent. Flowers monoecious, solitary or rarely paired, axillary; bracteoles 2, semi-orbicular, appressed-pubescent, ± persistent, near base of pedicel. Male flowers on leafy shoots; pedicels 4–5 mm. long, appressed-pubescent; calyx bilobed, sepals 1–1.5 mm. long, semi-orbicular, appressed-pubescent outside; petals yellow or pale orange, free, ± fleshy, sub-equal, 5–6 mm. long, elliptic, acute, appressed-pubescent outside, glabrous within; stamens 0.5 mm. long, oblong, glabrous, connective not produced. Female flowers on leafy or defoliated shoots or on the old wood; pedicels 6–11 mm. long; sepals c. 2 mm. long, subacute; petals 5–7 (9) mm. long, ovate; carpels numerous, densely pubescent, stigma black when dry, glabrous; otherwise similar to male flowers. Fruit on a pedicel 1–1.5 mm. long; fruiting carpels usually 4–6, several-seeded (1.2) 2.5–3.5 (4.8) x 1.2–1.8 cm., cylindric, not usually apiculate, ± deeply constricted between the seeds, sparsely pubescent or glabrescent, finely rugose, red, black when dry, with stipes 3–6 mm. long. Seeds 4–6, 10–13 mm. long, biseriate.
