Description

Austin has put up for Hooker about 80 species of plants which she shall send through the Smithsonian Institution. There are some amongst them that she sent last year. The others are from the Prattville vicinity with the exception of a few from Miss Noy Hickerson of Fort Bidwell, Modoc County. Hickerson is only ten years old, but a botanist by nature; Austin looks for great things from her in the future. The girl has sent her about 50 species, two of which were new to California. Austin only numbered a few of the plants, the others she wrote the names of as she presumes Hooker is familiar with them all. The Amelanchier alnifolia [Saskatoon] is different from those found in other localities. Austin will collect in different localities this season and will not forget RBG Kew when distributing in the fall. She will obtain specimens of cones for Hooker, giving descriptions of the trees and locality. There were no cones in this part of the Sierras last year. Folio 9 comprises a list of the plants sent in a package, including the following species: Betula granifolia [B. grandifolia], Goodyera menziesii, Ranunculus glaberrimus, Ceanothus integerima [C. integerrimus], Pedicularis racemosa and Brodiaea ixioides.
