Description
[Letter translated from French] [Letter to Hooker as Professor of Botany, University of Glasgow] Bertero reports that he has received Hooker's letter via their friend Caldcleugh, Bertero is responding immediately and is also sending some miscellaneous leaves. He says he has described some new species from Chilli. He also says he would like to be 'of use' to Hooker. He is sending some samples which he would like Hooker to determine, Hooker can then send his findings to Bertero via Caldcleugh. He is studying the flora specific to the Island of Juan Fernandez which is in the Pacific Ocean. The specimens are in a mess so he can't send Hooker anything yet, but he will do as soon as he has put them in order. Hooker has offered to buy some specimens from Bertero and he explains at length why he will not accept this offer; he could use the money but the items are of great value to him and so he hopes Hooker will understand his reluctance to sell. He says the specimens from Juan Fernandez will have to be sent to Paris before coming to Hooker. He mentions the provinces of Conception, Valdivia, Chiloe, Coquimbo, Copiapó and Guasco. He writes of travelling to the codillera, specifically the western face of the Andes near Mendoza, he would also like to explore the pampass (plains), right up to Buenos Aires and Montevideo but this may not be possible because of the political situation. He suggests that he might go to Bolivia instead - as far as Santa Cruz de la Sierra and promises to write and inform Hooker what he decides when his plans are firmer. In a post script he adds that he is sending a sample of a Lycopodium whose generic character he does not know. Page 1 of 4.
