Description
Thomson sends his correspondent a few Mahogany seeds, he will try to send a larger packet by the next mail. He thanks his correspondent for a letter and the enclosed Latakia tobacco. He is having this distributed in small packets and is planting it in several places. He has not yet received the bag of seeds of Norfolk Island Pine. If he has not received it by tomorrow, he will write officially about it. He thanks his correspondent for the promise of economic plants but will not trouble him with the Cacti, Aloes et cetera. They have not yet commenced their Cinchona plantations but have 600 acres of land fixed upon. Thomson encloses his first Annual Report on the Institution, in which he sincerely hopes he has not unduly made use of his correspondent's name. He notes that he has sub-divided his Boehmeria nivea roots and has none yielding seeds, but shall try to obtain them elsewhere. He lists the works he has on Cinchona cultivation, including: Markham's Travels, Mr Ivor's pamphlet, and 'The Blue Book' containing the correspondence relating to Cinchona introduction to India from 1852 – 1863. He asks if others are published so that he may apply to the Government for them. Pages 1 and 4 of 4.
