Description
Morris has only just returned from New Orleans. The Jamaica Exhibit was a success and he thinks the fruit trade will benefit from it. Morris discusses his 'vigorous steps' to remove the quarantine that has existed against Jamaica for the last 30 years. He mentions meeting the Lemmons from California, Curtis the Florida botanist, Dr Gray from Harvard, and Dr Richardson. Professor Sargent arrived in Jamaica the day after they returned and Morris showed him around their most interesting localities, including Cinchona and Castleton, before Sargent went on to New Orleans. Morris notes Sargent's special mission was not a success as they are in the middle of a severe drought. A 'crank' by the name of Mr Crotch is in Jamaica and, as he seemed to know Hooker, Morris has asked him to Cinchona so that Mrs Crotch may see the Blue Mountains. Morris will spend some time establishing a meteorological station on the Blue Mountain peak at 7335 feet. The instruments came out recently from Negretti and Zambra and the station itself is the result of a visit Sir Henry Norman made to the peak with Morris last August. Miss North is currently in Jamaica on her way home from Chile. She appears 'slightly overdone' and appears to be suffering from some hallucination, which he is assured if fairly temporary. Morris has not seen her but will invite her to Cinchona. She is being cared for by Charles Campbell at Raymond Hall near Gordon Town. He would not have mentioned Miss North's health but did not want Hooker to hear exaggerated reports. Before going to New Orleans Morris sent a box of grasses [to RBG Kew], which he was anxious to have compared and determined on the plan suggested when he was home in 1883, whereby Hemsley would determine the plants, provided the Government made some compensation to him at the rate of £1 per day. If this is still practicable, Morris would be glad to have his grasses gone over and the expenses paid by the Crown Agents. Pages 1 and 4 of 8.
