Description
Fawcett asks Morris to pass his thanks to Thiselton-Dyer for the copy of the Royal Society Catalogue for the library. He thanks Morris for the drugs sent out on the recent steamer, he judges that they will be of great use in demonstrating to the people of Jamaica how they should send home their Cardamoms et cetera. Fawcett has despatched, for Morris, four bottles of dried Coca leaves from Castleton as well as some from Espeut at Spring Garden, some have been dried in the sun and some in the shed. He says he will attend to despatching seed to Cyprus. Fawcett writes that he has just been on a drive round by Castleton to Aqua Alta Vale, Fort George, Spring Garden and Port Antonio. Major Ellis is growing a large area of chocolate at Fort George but the plants were in bad condition. At Port Antonio Fawcett saw Watson, Captain Baker's cultivator, and made arrangements about experiments with banana manure. Fawcett also discusses Mr Pringle and the report of the Cinchona Committee; he thinks it will be difficult to get Pringle to agree to anything in favour of the febrifuge. He discusses at length the matter of the water supply for Hope [Garden], about which he has been in consultation with Cox. Fawcett describes the difficulty he has been having in taking possession of buildings from Mr Kemble. He makes a comment in anticipation of the December Bulletin and concludes by saying that he is enclosing copies of a recent exchange of correspondence between himself and Mr Hart [not attached].
