The letter will strengthen Walker's position when he discusses the matter with the Governor. From the enclosure [not attached] Morris will see that the Governor approves of his recommendations on the administration of the Department. Griffin will probably be given a trial at Castleton, in which case, Fawcett would prefer to keep Eugene Campbell for King's House and send David Willis to Morris. When Fawcett was last in Kingston he met Palache, S. Farquharson and Michael Solomon. In response to Espeut's query, on behalf of the elected members, regarding Hope [Gardens], Fawcett has written a circular letter to the newspapers; the enclosed [not attached] is from the [JAMAICA] GLEANER. Harris reports that the seed of Buchania [Buchanania] latifolia received from RBG Kew last September germinated freely but later died off. In the list of Nymphaeas sent, there is N. lotus var. edulis, but no specimen of that name arrived. The Saxaul, Haloxylon ammodendron, has not germinated. Fawcett continues his letter on 23 May by discussing his plans for the gardens. He encloses a sketch of his ideas [not attached] asking for Morris and Thiselton-Dyer's opinions. He discusses the survey of the site by 'D.P.W'. The Institute Board have agreed that Morris should be presented with a copy of the 'Proceedings'. He discusses Priest's favour with the press and his own ill treatment in the FALMOUTH GAZETTE. He will try and obtain seeds of Sesbania grandiflora for Morris and will order copies of the 'BULLETIN' for the Department. He notes Morris' comment that he should not bare the brunt of the reforming process, but thinks he has now set the ball rolling.
