Description
From this letter Hooker will see that Dalzell has returned to India again from Australia after an absence of nearly two years. He regrets to say that he has nothing of any consequence to write of the botany of South Australia, as Frederick Müller, a very good botanist, has been before him and has published a good deal of his discoveries in that part of the country. Dalzell is sure Hooker has lamented the death of their dear friend Dr Stocks. Dalzell is now left alone on this side of India as Law and Ritchie have left the country, he believes for good. Dalzell would like to know if Dr Stocks' collections have fallen into good hands. Before he left for Australia he made over to Stocks the whole of his collections for 12 years. This was a very valuable collection and he cannot learn what became of them. He hopes Hooker will write to him when he has leisure and he would like to know what Dr Hooker, Thomson and Wight are working on in the way of Indian Botany. In two or three months he is going to live in Gujerat [Gujarat], a part of India he has not yet seen. From there he hopes to be able so do something further in Indian botany. Pages 1 and 4 of 4.
