Description
Price thanks Prain for his letter of 3 Aug. Price has been travelling in Fokien province all August and September. He had not intended to be away from Formosa [Taiwan] for more than a month, but has done well and collected more than he would have been able to in Formosa during the typhoons. He will make two more trips: one along the north part of the 'Aiyn Sea'[?] and one up Mount Morrison. He will not leave before December, when he will go to Tokyo. Price has taken an interest in anthropology whilst in Formosa but hopes he has given botany equal attention. Price has written a full account to Mr Elwes. In Mr Wallace's garden, there is a beautiful natural hybrid between Lycoris aurea and possibly 'scapigera'. Price has seen the latter growing wild, it has scarlet flowers. L. aurea is in the FLORA OF KWANGTUNG[?]. The hybrid is pink. Price hopes to get some bulbs from Wallace for RBG Kew and has done a painting in case it is worth putting in the BOTANICAL MAGAZINE. Price hopes his second box of dried specimens have arrived safely. He cannot be sure if the orchids are new species until Dr Hayata has been through the specimens. The tree fern stems are from Elwes. Price asks Prain not to publish what he said about Camphor in his last letter; he hopes to get more information as, at present, he is not sure of his facts. Price asks Prain to thank Hill for his letters. Page 1 of 2.
