Description
Ito has not written to Thiselton-Dyer for a long time. He is living a life: 'secluded from the scientific circle of his western brethren', but has not forgotten the warm friendship he received from them, particularly at RBG Kew. He is ashamed not to have contributed anything to the botanical periodicals of England since his return to Japan. Most of his time is spent lecturing. He is trying to find time to work out a new enumeration of the Japanese plants with more accurate statements of habitat and origin than those of his predecessors. However, there is a lack of specimens and reference books such as Joseph Hooker's FLORA OF BRITISH INDIA, Bentham's FLORA AUSTRALIENSIS and GENERA PLANTARUM. Ito requests RBG Kew's help to accomplish his work and would always be grateful to receive publications that may be of interest to someone living in Eastern Asia. Ito has sent Thiselton-Dyer the second part of the PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY OF TOKIO and the first volume of the KINKWA-O TETSUYENSHI[?], Ito's own publication, which is now out of print. The Japanese government does not seem to have continued the publication of the book on the ligneous plants of Japan, although the manuscripts were prepared. Ito would like [William Botting] Hemsley to assist his work on the Eastern Asiatic Flora. Ito sends his regards to all his friends at RBG Kew: Mrs Dyer, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, Professor Oliver, Baker, Morris and Hemsley. In a postscript, he adds that he has enclosed some specimens and a note for Hemsley. Page 1 of 4.
