Description
Hance thanks Hooker for the copies of a letter extract he previously sent, which Hooker thought interesting enough to print in the 'Linnean Journal'. He has just received a specimen of Planera davidii which he has sent to Hooker along with two other solitary specimens from Peking [Beijing]: a new Salvia, which he has christened Salvia pogonocalyx, and a yellow flowered Orobanche. He discusses the prevalence of the group at Peking. The Salvia was gathered at Talienwan [Dalianwan] by Swinhoe. Hance is very much interested in Cupuliferae. Maximowicz kindly selected for him, specimens of Quercus castaneifolia and Q. macranthera from Fischer's herbarium, as species closely allied to Japonico-Chinese oaks. Kurz was good enough to pick out about nine species from the Calcutta [Kolkata] herbarium for him. These, however, were too imperfect and fragmentary. Amongst them is one noted as gathered by Dr Thomson and Hooker above Nunklow in Khasia in Sep 1850. He quotes and discusses Mr Kurz's remarks, which accompanied it, relating to the similarity with Q.[Quercus] griffithii. He now has 122 species or varieties of oak, excluding Castanopsis, which is a considerable number for a private student such as himself. He states that even if Hooker could send him a few leaves or fruit of Indian oaks he would be very grateful, as many of his specimens are imperfect. He has none of the Indian 'Carpini' or 'Coryli'[?]. Hance intends to make up his duplicates soon as it has been a long time since he sent any out. Annotated. Pages 1 and 4 of 4.
