Description
Many years ago, when in Japan, Dickins devoted himself to the study of botany and was in correspondence with Hooker's father [Sir William Jackson Hooker]. He also made a large collection of specimens that he sent home on the HMS 'Racehorse', which shortly after her departure, was lost near Chefoo. Not long afterwards, Dickins returned to England and was obliged to renounce the study of botany and the fruits of three years' labour in Japan. Two years ago he returned to Japan, but has hitherto not had time to do any useful botanical work. In a few months, however, he hopes to be in a position to be able to resume his old study. If Hooker thinks it worthwhile, Dickins would be happy to collect for RBG Kew under his instructions. He remembers losing many specimens through the excessive dampness of the climate in June and July and asks for advice on the best mode of packing and preserving them. He will gladly forward specimens to RBG Kew at his own expense, if the gardens would lend him some books during his stay in Japan. He has Thunberg, Bentham's FLORA HONGKONGENSIS and Murray's 'Conifers'. He would also be glad of a supply of proper drying paper. Dr Savatier, of the French dockyard at Yokosuka, is nearing completion of his most exhaustive work on Japanese botany and has been good enough to allow Dickins to use his herbarium. He goes on to discuss his passion for botany and hopes that he will be able to assist in the advancement of the science. Page 1 of 2.
