Description
Aldrich has lately arrived in Twickenham from Japan and leaves again for that country in a few days. He had hoped to have been able to have personally collected for Nicholson, but is very pressed with business so he fears he shall not have the pleasure. He writes to ask for some information regarding the exchange or distribution of seeds from RBG Kew, of which he saw some mention in the local paper a few days ago. Although he resides in Japan he is also interested in New Zealand, in which Colony it is his intention to settle; his son, the bearer of this letter, will proceed there next September. Aldrich would be very glad if he could obtain, from Kew, a collection of seeds of British trees and shrubs and others which might thrive in the climate of New Zealand, for his son to take out with him. He shall be most happy to obtain and send Nicholson any seeds from Japan or New Zealand in exchange. Page contains notes in various other hands noting that a list of Kew desiderata is to be prepared. A total of 454 packets are recorded as sent to Aldrich comprising: 118 American, 68 Asiatic, 225 European and 42 Coniferae plants. Aldrich's business card states that he is Secretary to the Railway Department, Imperial Public Works of Japan. Pages 1 and 2 of 4.
