Description
Thwaites has received Hooker's letter and is glad that he has recovered enough from his grief to go back to work at RBG Kew. Thwaites discusses Bentham's opinions on his Isauxis roxburghiana. Thwaites is sending Hooker a list of new species of Dipterocarpeae he has collected during the year and provides a summary of the 44 different species of Dipterocarps now known in Ceylon [Sri Lanka]. He discusses the possibility of merging Stemonoporus with Vateria, Isauxis and Monoporandra. He discusses genera that he expected to be referred to Malvaceae and states that Kydia axillaris is, as he conjectured, a new species. Thwaites discusses his arrangement of Euphorbiaceae [for ENUMERATIO PLANTARUM ZEYLANIAE], particularly two 'anomalous genera', and is glad Hooker generally approves of it. He also mentions some specimens he thought were Amanoa indica, but appear distinct. Thwaites has not heard from the government respecting a popular flora of Ceylon. Thwaites has been ill with nettlerash and a severe cold since returning from Newera Ellia [Nuwara Eliya], he thinks his illness was caused by travelling round the hills in the rain and it has prevented him from doing much. He will have to be more careful with himself now he has entered his fiftieth year. Thwaites has not been able to send the case of Dendrobium maccarthiae and other orchids yet. He hopes that Sir William [Jackson Hooker], Harvey and Oliver are improved in health. Thwaites also recommends that Thomson not be allowed to work too hard in the herbarium until he is well enough.
