Description
Thwaites is happy to report that, according to MacNicoll, two of the Cinchona calisaya brought out by Dr Anderson are likely to prosper. MacNicoll has sown all the seeds they have received and they occupy more than 200 pots. Thwaites is now sending up [to Nuwara Eliya] some glazed framing to construct a house for the young plants. A few of the C. micrantha seeds sown in Peradeniya have come up and one or two of the C. succirubra. Their excellent Governor, Sir Charles MacCarthy, seems disposed to meet his every wish in relation to Cinchona cultivation and therefore they have every chance of success. MacNicoll and Cameron take great interest in the matter. He trusts that his collector has succeeded in getting good plants of Cyathea sinuata and that they arrive at RBG Kew in good condition as they would be a beautiful addition to the fernery. They grow in a very damp atmosphere at no great elevation and will bear, he thinks, Kew's hottest house. Thwaites has been suffering from a severe headache for several days and has a sharp attack of nettle rash on his feet but hopes to be right again soon. Pages 1 and 4 of 4.
