[Letter to Hooker as Professor of Botany, University of Glasgow] Walker writes to ask Hooker and Lady Hooker a favour: they have learned that the 58th Regiment has been ordered to Glasgow and their eldest daughter is married to Captain Bridge of that Corps. Walker does not think her daughter or her husband know anyone in Glasgow and she would be greatly obliged if the Hooker's would pay them a little attention, especially as if she rightly recollects, the military do not easily get into good society in Scotland without introduction. Walker grieves to say that their botanical pursuits seem quite at a standstill. They had planned an excursion to the Hills next month, but she has given up the intention for the present for several reasons. A report has been received that General Walker may be sent in Command of a Brigade in Almorah [Almora] if there is to be war with the Nepalese. However, this seems very doubtful and will probably depend much on the result of their operations in the 'Celestial Empire'. They are in daily expectation now of hearing how the 'outside Barbarians' have been received and what they have done. Their force seems very inadequate, at least the military part of it, but they are quire ignorant of the plan of the Campaign. Almorah is somewhat to the west of the Nepal Territory and affords, so they are told, a splendid field for botany. Walker would much like to go, as she believes there will be no chance of fighting in that quarter, but all is uncertain at present. General Walker lately heard from Dr Wight, but nothing new. They will be glad to help Hooker if they can and she hopes Hooker has had better accounts of and from his son [Joseph] than he anticipated when he last wrote. Page 1 of 4.
