Description
[Letter translated from French] Bouton thanks Hooker for providing him with information on the plants he sent previously. On this occasion, he has only had time to send a small packet of dried specimens that Mr [Charles] Telfair asked him to send. He regrets that he has not been able to send a more considerable collection, but hopes Hooker will find some interesting specimens among them. Bouton goes on to list the specimens that might interest Hooker, including: a Polypodium labelled 'No 1' found growing on the trunks of old trees in the interior of the island, and which might be the P. irioides from Hooker's ICONES FILICUM; another rare fern, marked 'Polypodium No 2' that he has found in only one locality; a Cardamine; an Oldenlandia; a 'Riedleya' cultivated at the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden, which Bouton believes was introduced from Brazil; a Jossinia that he proposes, if new, to name J. macrophylla; and a Solanum from Madagascar of which he will also send seeds. Bouton would be grateful for Hooker's observations on these plants. Bouton was pleased to learn that Hooker found some new species in the last collection and is sending further specimens of these plants to Hooker, including: Jossinia ferruginea, Dombeya umbellata and Cerastium mauritianum. Detailed descriptions will follow. Bouton has also enclosed two crude drawings, which he apologises for: one represents a Rousseauxia or Roussea simplex; the other, a species of Clitoria from Mauritius, possibly C. viridiflora. He mentions a plant that he believes to be a Rubiaceae, but the specimen is not well preserved; he describes the flowers and includes a small sketch of it. Bouton goes on to thank Hooker for his offer to send several of his works on the Cryptogamie. He discusses which works of Hooker's he has and those he would like to receive. In return, Bouton will try to put together complete collections of Crytogamic and Phanerogamic plants growing in Mauritius, Bourbon [Réunion], Madagascar and other Islands in the region. Page 1 of 4.
