It seems that Kirk has been asked to comment on possible candidates to act as Botanist for the expedition. He reports that Aitchins will not accept the post unless more money is offered, adding that he is too 'old and Indian to take to rough African ways'. He reports that Schweinfurth is a man of 'vast experience' but he does not know enough about him to comment on his suitability for an African expedition. The letter continues in the same tone, comparing three possible candidates. Kirk finally concludes that Schweinfurth is probably the best man for the job.
