Mann writes that he was ashore on Madeira and saw the glasshouses and stores there. Plants including Acacia paviflora, Casia sp., Euphorbia musa and some ferns. He discusses the difference between farmland and urban areas, stating that houses were covered with watermelons and gourds. Mann saw Dracaena draco on the mountainous slopes, but did not get any specimens as his paper was packed away. He writes of his travels on the ship, and the cultivated plants such as sugarcane and cochineal[?]. His voyage took him from Madeira to Tenerife, to Santa Cruz and on to Cape Verde. Mann writes about arriving at Bathurst and the River Gambia, here he visited the market and lists plants he found, including, Elais guineensis, Borassus aethiopum and Cocos nucifera as well as Ficus sp.
