Description
Kirk writes that he has been to the south of Zanzibar and was delayed at latitude 9° 50’ south and found the Calumba abundant but did not know what the locals used it for. Kirk suggests that this would be a more open and available source. Kirk has collected some plants but thinks they may have all died and not be suitable for shipping back to England. There is a note in another hand which states ‘don’t want it at Kew’. Kirk also mentions sending a small box with roots and bulbs of Drimia which he describes as ‘beautifully coloured leaves that spread flat out in the ground’ and a ‘variegated leaved orchid, a white orchid and several other things all new to me which generally means to you as well one is a beautiful ginger with large pale pink flowers.’ In another hand it states the ‘remainder of this letter refers to Landolphia and is with the papers on that subject.’ Page 1 of 4.
