Description
Letter expressing pleasure that specimens of Welwitschia arrived at Kew. Monteiro has collected four more specimens of the same at Mopamedes, on a sandy plain south of Little Fish Bay, which he will send along with seeds, cones, pollen and flowers plus insects found on the cones. Monteiro notes a detail about the relationship between flowers and leaves in this species. He describes the inhospitable conditions in which he collected specimens including Welwitschias and the only other species found growing in the harsh, dry climate of Little Fish Bay, a specimen of which is contained in the box being sent to Kew. He observes that the Welwitschias enjoy hard stoney soil topped with sand. He notes the subtle differences between male and female plants of this species. Monteiro sends in a bottle containing flowers of a parasitic plant that grows on the roots of some Euphorbias. A description is included, and uses listed. A sample also of Umpéque is sent, which is a tree abundant in the interior of Mopamedes from which useful oil is obtained. Page 1 of 4.
