Biography
Dmitry Bukinich was a Russian archaeologist and agronomist. He accompanied N.I. Vavilov on an expedition to Central Asia in the 1920s, where they collected plants and made extensive geographical observations. Bukinich also made photographic records of the landscapes and people they encountered.
The findings of Vavilov and Bukinich's expedition of 1924, on which they were accompanied by V.N. Lebedev, were published in the work Agricultural Afghanistan (Zemledelcheskii Afghanistan) in 1929. The theory of south-west Asia being the centre of origin of many cultivated crop plants was supported by their botanical findings.
