Biography
American druggist from Philadelphia who pursued botany for recreation and to combat tuberculosis. He amassed a private herbarium of almost 15,000 specimens including European plants sent by prominent botanists of the period. He eventually sold his herbarium to Amherst Agricultural College in Massachusetts. He is sometimes confused with his son, William Wallace Denslow Jr (1856-1915), who was an illustrator who produced some plant illustrations and worked with the author L.F. Baum to produce the original illustrations for the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
