Biography
Gardener and plant collector who explored on behalf of the British Museum with her friend Mrs Nancy Fullerton. Lindsay introduced many old varieties of rose into western horticulture including Rosa 'Rose de Rescht' and 'Gloire de Guilan'. She developed a garden at Sutton Courtenay in Berkshire and was a friend of the American horticulturist Major Lawrence Johnston (1871-1958), who was born into a wealthy New England banking family and whose mother was English. Jonston created the famous garden at Hidcote and bought La Serre de la Madonna near Menton in the South of France. He spent the winters at the latter house and garden and grew subtropical plants, retiring there in 1948. Hidcote was left to the National Trust and, when he died, La Serre de la Madonna was bequeathed to Nancy Lindsay.
