Biography
Greek doctor, naturalist, writer and poet based in Corfu; veteran of the First World War and served as a doctor with the British Army Medical during the Second World War, later publishing on the evacuation from Crete. Became a friend and mentor of naturalist and writer Gerald Durrell (1925-1995), teaching him the importance of scientific analysis. The scientific publications of Stephanides were mainly on entomology, particularly in relation to species of mosquito, on microscopy, and the natural history of Corfu. Evacuated to UK during the war and settled there, working as a radiologist until retirement in 1961, died 13 April 1983 in Kilburn.
