Biography
Australian horticulturist from Geelong who began his career as a teacher in the Victorian Education department, initially employed in Geelong and later in East Gippsland and Orbost. He left education to join the Department of Agriculture, where he worked on orchard trees. He was appointed Lecturer and later Principal of the School of Horticulture in Burnley, Victoria (1909-1931). During this time he was also appointed Government Pomologist (1917) and Acting Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne (1922-1923). He was an active member of the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria from 1913 and was later elected president (1926-1928). He was also Vice President of the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria.
His botanical collections began while he was a teacher in East Gippsland and continued during his career based in Melbourne, including leading the the Grampians Research Expedition. Pescott published on both horticultural plants and native flowers of Victoria, and was considered an authority on Acacia and Orchidaceae. Chiloglottis pescottiana R.S. Rogers (Orchidaceae) was named in his honour, though the type material was later considered to be a natural hybrid (X Chilosimpliglottis pescottiana (R.S. Rogers) Jeanes.
His botanical collections began while he was a teacher in East Gippsland and continued during his career based in Melbourne, including leading the the Grampians Research Expedition. Pescott published on both horticultural plants and native flowers of Victoria, and was considered an authority on Acacia and Orchidaceae. Chiloglottis pescottiana R.S. Rogers (Orchidaceae) was named in his honour, though the type material was later considered to be a natural hybrid (X Chilosimpliglottis pescottiana (R.S. Rogers) Jeanes.
