Biography
Dutch botanist who was Director of the Buitenzorg Botanic Gardens for more than 50 years, the institution later becoming the Kebun Raya Bogor or Bogor Botanic Gardens. The modern gardens include the Teijsmann Garden as a memorial to their former director. Teijsmann was responsible for cultivation on a systematic basis of Vanilla in Java, introduced in 1846. The genus Johannesteijsmannia H.E. Moore in the Arecaceae was named in his honour.
