Biography
German physican and cryptogamist from Kaiserlautern who set up his practice in Neustadt. He was involved in the uprising of 1848 when revolutionaries in cities all over Germany took control of city administration. In order to escape the political backlash and persecution by Prussian troops, he fled to exile in Switzerland and established a practice near Zurich. He did not return to Germany until 1866 when he moved to Frankfurt am Main, shortly before his death. Hepp's cryptogamic herbarium, collected mainly in Switzerland, was purchased by BM (1868) and consisted of algae (1,640 specimens), mosses (778 specimens) and lichens (2,406 specimens). In 1874 a further 962 specimens of lichen exsiccatae were purchased.
