Biography
British diplomat who joined the British Consular Service in China (1867) and became Consul-General in Tiensin and Peking (1900). When Korea was first opened to the West, Carles was appointed Brtish vice-consul and travelled the country looking for commercial opportunities. Plants named in his honour include the monotypic genus Carlesia Dunn in the Apiaceae, Quercus carlesii Hemsl. (= Castanopsis carlesii (Hemsl.) Hayata), Vaccinium carlesii Dunn and the scented garden shrub Viburnum carlesii Hemsl.
