Biography
English mycologist from Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, who collaborated extensively with Miles Joseph Berkeley. He is commemorated by the mycological genera Broomeia Berk., Broomella Sacc., Broomeola Kuntze and Neobroomella Petr. His herbarium of some 40,000 specimens was bequeathed to BM (1886), but this consisted primarily of fungi which were transferred to K (c. 1961) under the terms of the Morton Agreement. Original algal specimens, lichenised fungi and myxomycetes, remain at BM. His scientific library is at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution.
