Biography
British architect and botany enthusiast who was elected President of the Holmesdale Natural History Club (1929). His herbarium was bequeathed to BM in 1930 and consists of some 100,000 specimens of British phanerogams and cryptogams mainly from Surrey. It includes material co-collected or exchanged with many of his associates plus the complete personal herbaria of at least eight other collectors. Specimens are often labelled simply with the initials 'C.E.S.', a fashion that Salmon seems to have made popular amongst British botanists, leading to much confusion over the identity of collectors of the early 19th century. Material collected by Salmon is in many herbaria and probably in more European herbaria than indicated here; duplicates at B were destroyed in the Second World War.
