Biography
German teacher and botanist from Brandenburg who taught at Sommerfeld (1857), Görlitz (1860), Bromberg (1864) and Königsberg (1866-1892). He retired in 1882 and was later resident in Breslau. Baenitz studied natural sciences in Königsberg (1866-1870) and made collections mainly in Silesia. He edited and distributed sets of his Herbarium Europaeum (1873-1898) representing material of many European collectors and countries. This and other named collections are not regular exsiccatae as the numbering is irregular and only a comparatively small number of sets were issued. American collections attributed to him were from Chile and Bolivia and collected by O.A. Buchtien. From 1892 he retired to Berlin through ill-health.
