Biography
Swiss teacher and botanist who specialised on the Chenopodiaceae, Amaranthaceae and the flora of western Asia especially the Flora Iranica project. The genus Aellenia Ulbr. in the Chenopodiaceae was named in his honour in 1934. In 1952 he co-founded the Société de Botanique de Bâle and the journal Bauhinia. His herbarium was at Basle and designated PAE, subsequently transferred to Geneva where it has been referred to as G-PAE (or G-AELLEN), but is now incorporated in the general phanerogam collections of G. The genus Aellenia Ulbr. in the Chenopodiaceae was named after him (1934) and many other taxa including Marrubium aellenii Rech. f.
