Biography
British bookseller and publisher (1858-1868), the owner and editor of Friend, a monthly journal of the Religious Society of Friends or Quakers. He became Lecturer in Botany at Bedford College (c. 1868) and at St Thomas's Hospital (1869-1873). Botanically known as a cryptogamist, Bennett also published on pollination and floristics of the Alps. He was elected vice-president of the Linnean Society of London (1891–1892), Vice-President of the Microscopical Society (1892, 1899-1900) and editor of their journal (1897-1902). The herbarium of A.W. Bennett was given to C.E. Salmon (1872-1930), and the latter botanist's herbarium was bequeathed to BM (1931). Some of the specimens from Bennett's herbarium are dated from as early as 1834 or as late as 1907, and are probably those of his father William Bennett (1804-1873) and his brother Edward Trusted Bennett (1831-1908).
