Biography
British forester from London who joined the Indian Forest Department (1871-1879), where he had a distinguished career and was promoted to Conservator of Forests, and subsequently appointed Director of the Imperial Forest School, Dehra Dun (1890-1899). He published on timber trees and their uses, particularly in road-building, roofing and bridge construction and he was Editor for Indian Forester (1878-1882, 1891-1899). Gamble also published more general botanical works including initiating a flora of the former Presidency of Madras. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society (1899). The genus Gamblea C.B. Clarke was named in his honour. His herbarium of some 50,000 specimens was donated to K (1925). Material at BM is mainly Indian, collected 1885-1887, but includes some original British material and cryptogams transferred in part from K under the terms of the Morton Agreement after 1961.
