Biography
Dutch botanist. Jan Valckenier Suringar was the son of botanist W.F.R. Suringar (1832-1898) and served as professor of dendrology at Wageningen University. Part of the Clifford Herbarium came into his hands in 1889, probably from his father, who was then director of the Leiden University herbarium, (the main set is at BM). The younger Suringar took his mother's maiden name to create a double barrelled surname, Valckenier Suringar.
Suringar was granted his doctoral degree at Leiden in 1898 and went on to serve as the unofficial caretaker-director of the Leiden Rijksherbarium between 1896 and 1899. After this he taught at the state agricultural, horticultural and forestry school at Wageningen and in 1900 became director of the Wageningen Botanical Garden. When Wageningen's Agricultural University was founded in 1918, Suringar became professor of dendrology, which post he held until 1924. Among his published works were several volumes on the genus Melocactus and a biography of Carl Linnaeus (1908). He continued to research and publish works on botanical nomenclature in his retirement.
