Biography
Chinese grass expert. Yi-Li Keng was particularly interested in the Triticeae tribe of the Poaceae. Keng was born in Nanjing and attended National Southeastern University, graduating in 1927.After this he participated in collecting in Zhejiang Province with H.H. Hu and S.S. Chien. He went on to study at George Washington University, achieving his master's degree in 1932 and PhD the following year. His thesis, The Grasses of China (1933), provides treatments of 154 genera and 536 species. Back in China, Keng was appointed Professor of Botany at Nanjing University, where he remained for the rest of his career. The genus Kengyilia C.Yen & J.L.Yang is named after him. His son, Pai Chieh Keng, also became a botanist and the pair published some works together, such as New Bamboos from Sichuan Province (1946).
