Biography
German amateur bryologist and journalist. Leopold Loeske began to study mosses in the garden of his parents' house as a child, and everything he learned about bryology was self-taught. He collected in Germany but also visited the French Alps in 1931 and 1933 as well as travelling to Switzerland. During the economic crisis following the Second World War Loeske struggled financially and worked for eight years as a correspondent in a house of commerce. In this period, however, he always passed his spare time peering down a microscope and began to publish works on mosses from 1903. His first publication was entitled Moosflora der Provinz Brandenburgs and perhaps his most important was Monographie der europäischen Grimmiaceen, II Autlage (1930). As well as this he was also interested in morphology and in total produced 70 publications. Loeske died suddenly in the field just outside of Berlin.
