Biography
American medic interested in forensics, conchology and botany. R. Eglesfield Griffith, formally of the University of Maryland, worked as a lecturer in materia medica and medical jurisprudence at the Philadelphia School of Medicine. A member and later vice president of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, he donated many works to their library, some of great historical importance. He was also responsible for arranging their conchological department. In 1835 he was appointed editor of the American Journal of Pharmacy and, as well as translating many French medical works into English, he brought out an American edition of M. Ryan's A Manual of Medical Jurisprudence (1932). Griffith was also a member of the American Philosophical Society.
