Biography
Chonosuke Sukawa (also spelt Tschonoski or Tchonoski Sugawa) acted as an assistant to the Russian botanist Carl Maximovicz while Maximovicz was in Japan between 1860 and 1864. Sukawa offered to continue collecting plants for Maximovicz after his return to Russia and between then and 1887 sent to St. Petersburg many specimens and seeds from areas in the interior of Japan inaccessible to foreigners, such as the Nikko Alps north of Tokyo. Maximovicz and others named a number of new species in his honour, such as Acer tschonoskii Maxim. and Trillium tschonoskii Maxim.
